There’s No Taste Like Home

After an illustrious career working under Michelin Star patissieres, acclaimed pastry chef Fuyuko Kondo returns home to Pasadena and reflects on what a life of baking has taught her.

Client: Fuyuko’s Kitchen

Director & CD: Sam Vladimirsky

Writers: Jo Rosenthal & Sam Vladimirsky

Editor: Dylan Chant

Cinematographer: Scott Larson

Assignment: Deliver a 90 sec. brand film for Fuyuko’s Kitchen, a Pasadena pastry staple.

The work: Spend thirty seconds with pastry chef Fuyuko Kondo, and you’ll fall in love…with both the Japanese-American chef and her signature French baked goods. In our early conversations, the theme of home came up again and again. Home: where the master patissiere performs culinary wizardry. Home: the place you bring your warm galette or madeleines from Fuyuko’s Hollywood farmer’s market pop-up. Home: Fuyuko’s return to the city that raised her. Add in a cheeky pun and a love of the Wizard of Oz, and a campaign was born. In this brand film, we played with rich, warm color palettes echoing a pastry as it rises up to its full glory in the oven. At the heart of the piece is Fuyuko herself, doing what she loves most in the world.
